Critical inner voices are a part of the human experience, and most of us have at least one person that speaks to us from our subconscious mind. These voices are present in our everyday conversations, from telling us we’re not good enough to tell us we’re a burden. The voices are part of our identity and are integral to our personal development, helping us discover who we are, and who we are meant to be.
How Can I Conquer My Critical Inner Voice?
Most people who know me know that I have a tendency to be quite critical of myself sometimes to a fault. A while back, I stumbled across a story that really hit home for me. In it, a young man was dealing with an inner voice that told him he would never be good enough. It was this voice that prevented him from pursuing his dreams, and it affected his relationships. And I knew that once I read this, I would never be able to forget it. I particularly remember the moment I decided I wanted to conquer that voice. It was during my freshman year of college, and I was facing an intimidating paper outlining my topic. As I was writing, I noticed that my inner voice was talking me out of sharing my thoughts with others.
What is the Critical Inner Voice?
One of the hardest things for some of us to do is slow down and listen to what our inner voice is saying to us. Our inner voices can be negative and self-defeating. They also can be positive and motivational. Most people don’t realize they have a limiting inner voice until they start hearing it on a daily basis. The negative voice will have a negative impact on how they view themselves, others, and the world. Often times the limiting voice will make us believe that we are not worthy of the love, support, and opportunities of life.
Being for Yourself or Against Yourself
In a spiritual sense, being for yourself means being in tune with yourself and being aware of your thoughts and feelings. It means not blaming yourself for feeling a certain way and being compassionate toward yourself for feeling bad or guilty. It means accepting that we all have our own unique experiences and that your life is your own. Being for yourself also means accepting yourself, warts and all.
