It’s been a while since I was a decent sleeper. Frequently, I would lie in bed worried about the day’s events or potential outcomes for the next day. Then, even when I do fall asleep, my mind will start racing so badly that I can’t get back to sleep after I wake up. Although I was informed that giving up wine, chocolate, and coffee might help, the truth is that I wasn’t sure I could live without them.1 Foundation for Sleep. Coffee and slumber.
I started taking the prescription drugs that my doctor had given me to help me sleep. However, she suggested that I attempt to improve my sleep hygiene as well because she was concerned about my bad sleeping patterns and wanted to make sure I didn’t grow overly dependent on these meds. Naturally, sleep hygiene doesn’t entail fluffier pillows or softer sheets; rather, it refers to creating better routines for how you get ready for bed. She claimed that doing this would enhance my general health and possibly ease my withdrawal from prescription sleep aids. Even though I followed some of her behavioural suggestions—like avoiding screens before bed, turning off lights and noise, eating healthily, and exercising—I was still having insomnia at the end of the day.
I therefore made the decision to test out the sleep material on the Aura app, which was developed by psychologists, therapists, and mindfulness professionals to provide science-based, individualised listening sessions for mental wellness, which includes sleep. It offers thousands of audio recordings, including guided meditations, sleep stories, and pre-recorded sleep therapist coaching sessions, to help with mindfulness and sleep improvement. Additionally, some of the material is based on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), a kind of treatment that can be used to enhance sleep by using relaxation methods and guided meditations to help alter unhelpful sleeping patterns.
After using the app for a month, I’ve come to the same conclusion as so many others: the technology is effective.

How I Signed Up for Aura
You may download the Aura app from Google Play or the Apple App Store on your smartphone, or you can register from your PC, since it is compatible with both iOS and Android devices. I put it on my phone to download.
I was given the choice to download the app and utilise the basic free version, the premium version, or a seven-day free trial. I chose to test the subscription version of Aura since the free version is so restricted—it only allows for one three-minute listening session every two hours.
Aura Sleep App Subscription Prices
The premium version costs $11.99 a month, though you can pay for a whole year upfront for $59.99 (which amounts to $4.99 per month). I opted for the month-to-month premium option.
There is also a lifetime plan, for a one-time charge of $399. Both subscriptions give you access to all the app’s features.
There’s also a plan for one-on-one coaching with a sleep therapist for $149 a month (which I did not try). With this plan, you get one free video onboarding call (30 minutes); unlimited messaging with your coach; a private journal (which you can choose to share with your coach); mood, mindfulness, and sleep data tracking; and the option to book additional video calls with your coach.
It was a bit difficult to bill. I was shocked to see that, after seven days of using my computer to sign up for the free trial, I had been renewed at the annual fee.
This is how I found out that you can only upgrade from the trial to a monthly subscription by making an in-app purchase on Google Play or the Apple App Store. After you finish the app’s first suggested session, a paywall appears with a monthly plan subscription choice.
However, after seven days, the website sign-in for the free trial automatically upgrades to the annual membership. You can see how issues may arise from this lack of coherence.
I experienced a billing problem and left a message on the easily reachable customer support number—I hadn’t intended to join up for a whole year.
The good news is that I received a personal email response the next day from the Aura staff, who also easily switched me to a monthly subscription and reimbursed the annual fee.
When I first accessed the app after downloading and paying for it, I was prompted to fill out a questionnaire that would help the app better understand my requirements and the problems I wanted to solve before creating a customised plan only for me. I expressed my desire for improved sleep, less tension, anxiety, and relaxation.
Aura Sleep App Evaluation
I was then prompted by the app to choose some options for the kind of material I desired. For the audio material, I could choose a male or female voice and an accent, with options including American, British, Indian, Australian, and many more (but I was limited to English as my language). In addition, I may choose the race of my coaches, who provide courses and exercises that are pre-recorded to promote better sleep.
I also told the app that I preferred tales over music as I was falling asleep, although there are a tonne of options available if you like listening to music or other noises.
After I completed my profile, Aura started choosing resources specifically for me to sleep on. This had a plethora of sleep-related stuff, such as tales, meditations, short stories, motivational sayings, and global descriptive passages. Ultimately, I was presented with hundreds of sleep tales to choose from.
How I Used the Aura App
Because of all the many sleep-related information it offers, I first found the app to be overwhelming. However, as I browsed through and played around with the content, I found that using it got more natural. The more I used it, the more the software learned about my favourite choices and tailored my content recommendations, sorting through hundreds of options to find what I was looking for.
Using the basic premium edition (i.e., not the one with possibilities for individual therapy sessions), I was able to choose sleep-focused therapists (who guide you through the exercises via pre-recorded lectures) and sleep-themed story categories that were ideal for me. I was immediately drawn in by the readings’ language, pace, and subject. I experimented with the voices of the readers and the duration of the exercises before choosing my favourites, but I was free to use the programme whenever I chose.
Additionally, there’s a sizable meditation library with both guided and unguided options (where you may relax to the sounds of nature or soothing music). Guided tracks walk you through an activity with the help of a prerecorded voice.
My New Nightly Schedule With Aura
Improved Quality of Life
Every night, I would begin with a three-minute breathing exercise guided by a therapist, followed by three more minutes of deliberate bodily relaxation. I would then curl up in the sheets to write my novel.
A baritone reader would often lull me to sleep with descriptions of a verdant garden or a beach bay. I always chose stories that lasted longer than twenty minutes, in case I needed extra time to fall asleep. I soon discovered that compelling fiction or non-fiction history stories should be avoided. The most effective stories for falling asleep were, well, dull, with lots of details that didn’t encourage critical thought.
The main objective of the sleep therapies on Aura is to combat stress, and in my case, it was just as effective as promised.
My body and mind felt calmed down by Aura’s mindfulness exercises and meditations, and I was able to stop worrying thoughts by practicing breathing techniques.
Lowering the body’s levels of cortisol and adrenaline is the aim of these activities. Mine seems to have dropped, allowing me to get some rest.
After a week or so, I started to look forward to getting ready for bed. It had become customary to use Aura at night. I would wash my face, brush my teeth, and prepare it.
I was waking up feeling invigorated—my focused attempt to enhance my sleep hygiene was paying off.
I did, however, find the background tracks—music or other sounds that might play—to be a little challenging at times. One strange feature of Aura was that, even when I wasn’t using Aura, its sounds and music seemed to follow me about on other phone apps. Eventually, though, I managed to disable the background music for the app and prevent it from playing in other places on my phone.

I thought the app surpassed my expectations and appropriately stated what it could do.
It enabled me to continue doing what I found effective. For instance, I could choose a bedtime story and go to sleep. However, it’s a great resource for anyone looking for music or noises, and it provides an experience that ought to satisfy the demands and tastes of the majority of users.
The application is dynamic. With each passing day, the vast library gains further therapists and information. Sleep is only one aspect of the therapeutic alternatives; I also found the coaching and information in other areas, such stress management and meditation, to be quite helpful.
I’ve read that developing a habit requires 80 repeats. We all need to cross a “hypnagogic” bridge between wakefulness and sleep, when consciousness fades and dreaming begins to intrude. Aura swiftly assisted me in finding this bridge. Just one month into using Aura, I already felt as though I had formed a new routine that was significantly enhancing my sleep hygiene.
